Random Portland Details, Poke. Story.

Early this spring, (February 9th, to be exact) I ventured out into my new city with my camera to see what I could see. It was 65 degrees and sunny. There was no snow on the ground, and I tried, and failed, to keep from feeling just a little smug that I had escaped from the snowy winter “wonderland” that is Michigan.

Lukewarm Water

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, I can now die happy. Last night I shook Harry Shearer’s hand, and listened to him sing one of the funniest songs of political satire I have ever heard in my life. It’s called “Addicted to Oil” and is done in the voice (and, happily, with the mannerisms) of our very own Commander In Chief, George W. Bush.

Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls

Yep, that Harry Shearer.

Harry was at Mississippi Studios last night, supporting his lovely, talented and also very funny wife, whose name is Judith Owen.

Anyways, a friend of mine by the name of Paige came by the other night and used my newly cleaned Canon EOS 20D to take some photos of me playing guitar. Not that this kind of thing has really been the focus of these posts (at all) but…you know, what the hell.

Mike Doughty’s Question Jar Show

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

The gimmick of the “Question Jar Show” is…well…the Question Jar. Once Scrap and Mike finished sound check, they put a big glass jar out on stage with the idea that folks could write questions on a piece of paper (almost wrote “scrap” of paper…oops…sorry Scrap) before the show. The jar was filled by audience members before both sold out shows, and they got very nearly to the bottom of the jar in the course of each 90+ minute set. It was a great way to create intimacy between performer and audience - at least it worked really well for MD.

This is *not* the question jar:
