Camping in the Redwoods (Part 3)

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

More Elk! I think this is my favorite of the elk photos I’ve taken:

Horny

A totally unrelated aside: I’ve been listening to an internet radio station called Radio Paradise. Y’all should check it out. Last three tunes? Leonard Cohen, The Pixies, Neil Young backed by Pearl Jam. OMG, I’m in heaven!

Anyways, after camping in the Redwoods at Elk Prairie, we moved on the next night to (more…)

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Last picture post, I left you with a photo of Hecata Head Lighthouse. Here’s another, from a slightly different vantage point:

Where’s the Beef?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Here’s a beefy post with no pictures. Mostly comprised of news. Really, really good news!

First, about my last post – the one about me getting national exposure for my work – if you want to listen to the Terence Blanchard show, you need Real Player, which is free. Also, there are two “listen now” links on this web page. The first is the University of Michigan Jazz Band, which is just “OK”. The second link is actually the Terence Blanchard portion of the show. If you’re into jazz in any way, it’s worth a listen. FYI.

Second, Stacy passed the Oregon Bar exam!! Hooray!!

Third, I now work part time at a venue-slash-recording studio called “Mississippi Studios” here in Portland. You can check out our website here. Pretty cool. I’m a jack of all trades at this small business (studio recording work, front of house sound reinforcement, tending bar, production manager, etc…) …it’s a great place.

Fourth, Portland was just written up in Slate. Check it out here.

Told you it was beefy! :-D

Terence Blanchard’s NPR show

OK, I just HAD to post this. I wasn’t certain when this would actually get published, but check it out! David Lau (Grammy Award winning engineer/producer/owner of Brookwood Studio) and I were involved in the recording of this show at the wonderful Power Center in Ann Arbor Michigan. Credits are at the bottom of this page.

It was a great night, great show. Give it a listen!

One other shout out: Terence (and Wynton, and jazz & orchestral players all over the country) uses David Monette trumpets excusively. I’ve had the pleasure to meet Dave, whose factory moved from Chicago to Portland back in the late 90s. Great guy, a remarkable genius. Now all I have to figure out is how to afford one of his $10,000 horns! (Yes, you read the number of zeros correctly… :-( )

Camping in the Redwoods! (part 1)

At the end of July, Stacy sat for the Oregon bar exam. We decided that a reward for all that work was in order, so we took a short camping trip down to northern California via the Oregon coast.

First night, we stopped at a National Park called *ahem* Tillicum Beach, near Waldport OR. Very cool little campground, but very busy. All the campgrounds were on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Next morning, I made coffee, and here is what I saw:

Here’s our campsite, and Stacy fumbling (more…)
